The Empty Beach (1985)
DIRECTOR: Chris Thomson (Moving Target)
STARS: Bryan Brown (Money Movers, Parker), Anna Marie Monticelli (Smash Palace), Belinda Giblin (End Play), Ray Barrett (Contagion), Peter Collingwood (Mad Dog Morgan)
SYNOPSIS: Neo-Noir set in Australia with Bryan Brown as a private investigator. Bryan's character is a wiseass that almost everyone in the film seems to take an instant dislike to. He's also very funny in how he rubs people the wrong way. This trait makes him the perfect guy to investigate a missing person case in which a supposedly dead man may in fact be alive. The man's wife hires Brown to track him down. He was a rich businessman with connections to drugs, guns and other illegal trades. Bryan interviews a mistress, a nosey reporter, street winos and more; some of whom end up dead after talking with him. There's also a police chief trying to get Bryan to talk about all the dead bodies he keeps finding. A low key, entertaining, movie with lots of local Australian color, some nudity and a fairly violent last half hour. Based on the book by Peter Corris.
