A Flash of Green (1986)
DIRECTOR: Victor Nunez (Ruby in Paradise, Ulee's Gold)
STARS: Ed Harris (Knightriders), Blair Brown (Altered States), Richard Jordan (Mean Season), John Glover (52 Pick-Up)
SYNOPSIS: A small town reporter gives in to local corruption. Based on a novel by John D. MacDonald. Director Nunez specializes in low key character studies like Ruby in Paradise and Ulee's Gold and this film is no exception. Ed Harris writes for a Southern Florida newspaper. He covers car crashes, local politics and stories of interest. One story is the controversy over draining the town's bay and building condos. Local bigwig Richard Jordan (also the film's producer) asks Harris to help him out by getting some compromising information on a few folks in town (mostly opponents to the development project). Harris goes along and soon regrets his decision especially since love interest Brown is fighting to save the bay. All the actors are great especially Jordan who relishes his sleazy unapologetic character. Author MacDonald is known to movie fans for more pulpy fun like Darker Than Amber and Cape Fear. This film doesn't have any car chases or shoot-outs but the backroom deals, shady maneuvers and finale are realistic and compelling.
