Mongrel (1982)
DIRECTOR: Robert Burns
STARS: Aldo Ray (Nightfall, Terror on Alcatraz, Crime of Crimes), Terry Evans, Mitch Pileggi (X-Files, Shocker)
SYNOPSIS: At a low rent boarding house in Texas a group of 20-somethings play practical jokes on each other, drink lots of booze and shoot the shit. The tenants in the house include a bully redneck (Pileggi), his lackey, a nerdy war buff / Howard Stern lookalike, a friendly woman and a shy introvert. The shy guy is terrified of the title mongrel who's tied up outside. He even has recurring nightmares wherein the dog attacks him and kills members of the house. Eventually the dog does kill someone and is put down. But afterwards… the murders continue. Someone or something is out for blood. This obscure film is more of a character study with horror elements and is low on bloodletting. Top billed Aldo Ray is the mean owner of the boarding house and only turns up for a few quick scenes. An amazing "Deep Throat" pinball machine (!) is in the living room where the guys hang out. Shot in Austin, TX. Directed by Robert Burns who created the nightmarish art direction for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hill Have Eyes, The Re-Animator and Tourist Trap.
