The Orphan (1979)
(aka Friday the 13th: The Orphan)
DIRECTOR: John Ballard
STARS: Mark Owens, Peggy Feury, Stanley Church, Afolabi Ajayi, Joanna Miles
SYNOPSIS: Here's a good sleeper that sometimes gets dumped on by slasher fans. First off, it's not a slasher film. Despite the artwork and alternate title (used just before 1980's Friday the 13th). It's a solid little psychological horror with some surreal moments. A young boy in the 1920's becomes an orphan and goes to live with his strict Aunt. Having no outlet for his grief and pre-teen energy he begins hallucinating, having nightmares, talking to a stuffed gorilla, spying on the housemaid having sex and imagining all sorts of weird things. One infamous scene shows gruesome tongue removal on a live squirming patient. Fans of traumatic childhood films such as The Other and will enjoy this one.
