Kill Squad (1982) / Sakura Killers (1987)
2-Disc DVD Set
DIRECTOR: Kill Squad: Patrick Donahue / Sakura Killers: Richard Ward (aka Yu Wang)
STARS: Kill Squad: Jean Glaude, Jeff Risk, Jerry Johnson, Cameron Mitchell (Terror on Tape, Hollywood Cop) / Sakura Killers: Chuck Conners (Tourist Trap, Summer Camp Nightmare), Mike Kelly, George Nicholas
SYNOPSIS: Two action-packed, low budget, karate / kung fu rarities for fans of cheesy exploitation!
Kill Squad: Classic plot of a group of ragtag fighters (ala Magnificent Seven, etc) joining forces to battle bad guys. The victim of a brutal crime ends up in a wheelchair and organizes a team of karate and kung fu experts in early 80's California. The fighters are all ex-soldier buddies from his days in Viet Nam. There's a black pimp with fighting skills, a musclebound bruiser in a "Gold's Gym" t-shirt, an Asian ass-kicker and more. They battle a never-ending supply of goons, tough guys and killers in this action packed film. Plus you get some low budget car stunts as well. Genre fave Cameron Mitchell has a small role as the villain.
Sakura Killers: In the wake of the 80's ninja craze (American Ninja, Enter the Ninja, Revenge of the Ninja, etc) comes this low budget entry. Two American martial artists, Mike Kelly and George Nicholas, are sent to Japan (actually Taiwan) to recover a top secret formula. For some reason it's contained on a beta videotape kept in an old rental store keep case! They get their marching orders from the macho patriot Chuck Conners who putters around his U.S. ranch and shoots the occasional ninja with his shotgun. Meanwhile, our heroes search for the tape and fight the bad guys. Finally an old man offers to train them in the ancient ways of the ninja in a hilarious training sequence. The climatic fight scene is surprisingly good with 4 multi colored ninjas fighting under a highway overpass and using every trick in the book (swords, ninja stars, smoke bombs, rope, high flying kicks). It's all harmless ninja cheese with a healthy dose of bad dialog.
BONUS: Original TV spot for Kill Squad
