Flight to Fury (1964)

$20.00

DIRECTOR: Monte Hellman (Two Lane Blacktop)

STARS: Dewey Martin (The Thing), Fay Spain (Dragstrip Girl), Jack Nicholson, Vic Diaz (A Taste of Hell)

SYNOPSIS: Forgotten low budget thriller written by Jack Nicholson. The film kicks off with a bag of diamonds, a dead girl and group of desperate characters down in the Philippines. Our hero “Joe” (Martin) finds himself at the center of this drama along with a colorful character he meets named “Wickham” (Nicholson). Other players include two Asian men, Fay Spain and her boyfriend (Filipino film vet Vic Diaz). They all end up on a small charter plane leaving the country but it crash lands deep in the jungle. The pilot is a friend of Joe’s and before he dies he hands him the bag of diamonds. The survivors begin the trek to civilization but infighting and a clash with deadly rebels slows them down. The last 20mins is all action with gun fights and a last ditch play for the diamonds. This is an entertaining low budget thriller that moves along quickly. Solid performances by all the cast, but it’s so obvious how much talent Nicholson had even at this stage of his career. His character is the most interesting and quirky with some unexpected dialogue scenes. This was Nicholson’s 2nd script to get produced. Two years later he would team up with director Hellman again for The Shooting and Ride the Whirlwind.
