Northeast of Seoul (1972)
DIRECTOR: David Lowell Rich (Eye of the Cat, Satan's School for Girls)
STARS: John Ireland (Welcome to Arrow Beach, Delta Fox), Anita Ekberg (Screaming Mimi), Victor Buono (Mad Butcher),
SYNOPSIS: This low key international thriller has a Maltese Falcon vibe to it. Filmed in South Korea the basic story has an old man dying and leaving behind a priceless sword. The three stars are all separately searching for it. About 10 years earlier they worked as a team and stole the sword for the dead man…now they want it back. The con artists work together and double cross each other at every turn. Bickering with one another the whole time. A twist ending leaves the film open for a sequel. Ireland, Ekberg and Buono were all past their prime by 1972. But in a way that works in the film's favor. The fun of having the stars in late career is that their criminal characters are past their prime as well. Still sharp but maybe a little slower. It's all very PG rated with no nudity and just a dash of blood. Ireland gets the most action scenes as he's roughed up by thugs, shot at and in a car chase. Buono looks like the cat who ate the canary as he lies through his teeth to everyone. And finally, Ekberg still has some moves although she's 12 years past her La Dolce Vita days. Not for everyone but I was surprised how entertaining it was.
