Queen City Rocker (1986)
(aka Tearaway)
DIRECTOR:Bruce Morrison (Shaker Run)
STARS: Matthew Hunter (Bridge to Nowhere), Mark Pilisi, Kim Willoughby, Rebecca Saunders-Smith (Death Warmed Up), Peter Bland (Dangerous Orphans)
SYNOPSIS: Young punk gangs navigate the streets in 1980's New Zealand. At first glance you might think this is a quickie exploitation film but it's much better than that. It features a memorably low-key performance from Matthew Hunter as the main character "Ska". He seems to be bored with everything but he's not an asshole or unpleasant. Maybe just tired of the bleak future that awaits him. He has a gang of friends who steal, get into fights and drink lots of beer. They also love cruising the streets in their souped up cars looking for trouble. A lot of their time is spent in the seedier section of Queen City (aka Auckland, NZ) with strip clubs, prostitution and illegal gambling. One plot point revolves around Ska trying to get his older sister out of her upscale call girl job. He butts heads with the organized crime boss and his good friend ends up dead. After that Ska unites the local gangs to get revenge on the big boss during a rock concert he's promoting. There are numerous violent fight scenes, impressive camerawork and a memorable soundtrack. Fans of Dogs in Space, Quadrophenia, Suburbia, Rude Boy will dig this one. Recommended.
