Mind Killer (1987)
DIRECTOR: Michael Krueger (Night Vision)
STARS: Joe McDonald, Wade Kelley, Shirley Ross, Kevin Hart
SYNOPSIS: This forgotten film is 1/2 comedy and 1/2 horror. The first half of the film finds our hero Warren (McDonald) and his friend Larry (Kelley, doing his best Jerry Lewis impression) as two lonely single guys. Hopelessly shy and nerdy. Only Warren's normal roommate has luck with the ladies. Warren and Larry work at a large library in the basement archive. It's here that Warren discovers an old manuscript written by a crazy scientist. In the text he discovers a secret method of mind control. Before long Warren is able to read peoples' minds, control thoughts and perform telekinesis. At first he uses his new skills to pick up girls at the local bar but when he falls hard for a new co-worker things take a turn. The second half of the film loses the silly humor and becomes more of a horror / thriller. Warren finds out that the mad scientist also built a machine that will seriously increase his mind powers. But once he uses the machine he begins to mutate and lose all self control. It all ends in a Society style finale. There are lots of cool goopy, slimy, pulsing effects as Warren's head grows larger and more distorted. The producer of the cult fave Deadly Spawn, Ted Bohus, did the special makeup effects. Fans of Scanners, Slime City and From Beyond might want to check this one out. This movie was shot on video in Denver, Colorado.
