The Cat (Lo Mau) (1992)

$20.00

( aka Lo Mau )

DIRECTOR: Ngaio Choi Lam (Riki-Oh: the Story of Ricky, The Seventh Curse)

STARS: Waise Lee, Gloria Yip (Riki-Oh), Yuk-San Cheung, Phillip Chung-Fung Kwok (Hard-Boiled, Kid with the Golden Arm, The Five Venoms)

SYNOPSIS: From the makers of Riki-Oh comes this wildly entertaining Hong Kong import with flying cats, shapeshifters, aliens and intense action. A cute young alien girl, Gloria Yip, is the keeper of a fuzzy black cat (also an alien) that has magical powers. They're hiding out on Earth but an evil alien assassin (a memorable Kwok), who kills and jumps into bodies, is chasing them! A nerdy writer gets involved with the two and tries to help. The wildest scene in the film is a clash between the cat and a big mastiff dog. They fight in a junkyard and battle it out like a combo of Wile E. Coyote, Thunderdome and a Tsui Hark actioner! It's truly jaw-dropping. The plot mixes sci-fi, humor, action and horror. The Terminator, The Hidden and The Blob are stolen from. The shootout scenes are clearly influenced by John Woo's The Killer and Hardboiled. Some of the goopier special effects reminded me of From Beyond and John Carpenter's The Thing. Highly recommended. In spoken Chinese with English subtitles. WIDESCREEN (window-boxed).
