A Child for Tony (1969)
(aka Tony, Tobe Preskocilo)
DIRECTOR: Drahomíra Králová
STARS: Ludovít Kroner (If I Had a Gun), Josef Philip, Jozka Masincák
SYNOPSIS: Tony is a lonely single man living in a rundown house in the countryside of Czechoslovakia circa 1969. His brother and sister-in-law die in a car accident dooming their only child to the dreaded orphanage. Feeling guilty, Tony adopts him to raise as his own. The boy is precocious but proves to be helpful around the house. He soon convinces Uncle Tony into adopting his pal from the orphanage and then a young girl, etc. By the end Tony has two boys, a pre-teen girl and a teenage girl. The whole gang loves to play games and cause innocent hijinx but ultimately they're good kids. Not to mention the fact that Tony is just a bighearted kid himself. They all run around the farm and interact with horses, chickens, cows, etc. For some odd reason all the child actors are dubbed with very New York / Bowery Boys type voices! This film probably played well in Czechoslovakia and perhaps later in 1970's American classrooms when the teacher would break out the 16mm projector for film day. This is probably our most kid friendly, G-rated, film on the whole site. Dubbed in English.
