The Woman Inside (1981)
DIRECTOR: Joseph Van Winkle
STARS: Gloria Manon ("Bigfoot and Wildboy"), Joan Blondell (Gold Diggers of 1933, Grease), Dane Clark ("Ironside"), Michael Champion (Total Recall), Joe E.Ross ("Car 54 - Where Are You?", Gas Pump Girls), Jackie Vernon (Microwave Massacre)
SYNOPSIS: Vietnam vet "Hollis" (Manon) decides to get a sex change in this rare drama. The film begins in present day with Hollis/Holly finally getting his operation after a long journey. Under the doctor's anesthesia we see him as a young man getting wounded in the war. He has an epiphany after returning home and decides he wants to be a woman. Hollis/Holly shares a home with his nosey aunt (Blondell), who thinks he's a freak, and they often argue. Conversely, all the doctors and psychiatrists are very sympathetic and helpful. While living as a pre-op, Hollis/Holly drives a cab and meets an Irish musician (Champion). They have a chaste relationship but fall in love anyway. Before the operation Hollis/Holly tells him to wait a few more months and they can be together for real. This film is very low budget but it tackles the reality of a sex-change in great detail showing the good, the bad and the ugly. There's a surprising amount of topless nudity from Manon. Joan Blondell, who starred in Busby Berkeley films way back in the 1930's, provides comic relief in her final performance when her ignorant old-school values clash with Manon's character. Even though The Christine Jorgensen Story and Let Me Die a Woman pre-dated this film, The Woman Inside takes the subject matter much more seriously.
