The War of the Gargantuas (1966)

$20.00

DIRECTOR: Ishiro Honda (Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters)

STARS: Russ Tamblyn (Free Grass, "Twin Peaks"), Kumi Mizno, Nobuo Nakamura

SYNOPSIS: One of the all-time great monster mash films from original Godzilla director Ishiro Honda. A giant man / ape creature referred to as a "Frankenstein" or "Gargantua" appears in Japan destroying houses and eating people. The military goes on full alert and scientist Russ Tamblyn is called in to help. He had done experiments with a young baby gargantua many years earlier but the creature eventually escaped and hasn't been seen since. A second monster appears and the authorities name them Sanda (the nice brown one) and Gaira (the mean greenish one). Gaira continues to wreak havoc by stomping on cars, smashing buildings and spitting out the clothes of the humans he munches. They try shooting electronic lasers and even electrocution to stop him. Finally, the military wants to nuke them both but Tamblyn warns that it could create more Frankensteins! Meanwhile, Tamblyn's old pal Sanda saves his pretty Japanese assistant as she hangs from a cliff. When Gaira won't stop his rampage Sanda fights him in a knock-down, WWF-style, battle for the ages. This is a fast paced monster film with tons of miniature mountains, cityscapes and oceans for the Gargantuas to run around and fight in. Highly recommended. In spoken Japanese with English subtitles.
