The Falcon (1981)
(aka Banovic Strahinja)
DIRECTOR: Vatroslav Mimica
STARS: Franco Nero (Django, High Crime), Dragan Nikolic, Snja Vejnovic, Rade Serbedzija (Snatch), Gert Fröbe (Goldfinger, Shadowman)
SYNOPSIS: Franco Nero stars as a Serbian folk hero getting revenge for the kidnapping of his wife in this adventure film set in the Middle Ages. This period piece tale is a classic revenge story. However in the 14th century when your woman gets kidnapped by the enemy she is considered spoiled and no longer your wife. Despite everyone around him holding this belief, Nero rejects the idea and decides to save her anyway. Nero convinces the local prison ward to give him a handful of condemned prisoners to help him with his quest. By the end most of the characters are covered in filth and blood. It's like Game of Thrones without the dragons, budget or writing. There's some brief nudity and a few surprisingly graphic gore scenes. One poor soul gets his head lopped off. Another is impaled (with a large wooden spike up his ass and out of his shoulder) and then left to die while propped upright in the ground! Rade Serbedzija, who would become a familiar face to moviegoers in films like The Saint, Mission: Impossible II, Snatch, X-Men, Taken 2, steals the show as a flashy character who is loyal to the main villain but owes his life to Nero.
