Submission (1976)
(aka Scandalo)
DIRECTOR: Salvatore Samperi (Malicious)
STARS: Franco Nero (High Crime, Django), Lisa Gastoni (The Wild Wild Planet), Raymond Pelligren (The Climber, H-Bomb), Andrea Ferréol (The Tin Drum), Claudia Marsani (Conversation Piece)
SYNOPSIS: In pre-war France an older married woman "Eliane" (Gastoni) runs a small pharmacy. She has a female assistant "Juliette" and a shop clerk "Armand" (Nero) who cleans up and does maintenance. After hours Nero and the assistant screw in the back room. One night Nero mistakes the owner for the Juliette and starts feeling her up. At first he's nervous he'll lose his job but then he becomes obsessed with seducing her. She resists at first but over time he's soon slapping her around and playing humiliating sex games. He eventually gets bored and tell Gastoni that he wants to sleep with her virginal teenage daughter. Once again she resists but when Nero gives her the cold shoulder Gastoni starts to reconsider. All the while the threat of war creeps closer. Franco Nero really sinks his teeth into the role as he forces Gastoni to walk naked on the street in the middle of the night, strip in front of Juliette and degrade herself for his attention. Gastoni's desperate raw performance is memorable. Don't mistake this for a sexploitation film - it's closer to dramas like Last Tango in Paris and 9½ Weeks. Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now, Malicious, Last Emperor) provides the gorgeous cinematography and the score is by Riz Ortolani (Don't Torture a Duckling, Spy with a ColdNose).
