Nowhere to Hide (1977) / Hunter (1976)
Two Features on 1 DVD
DIRECTOR: Nowhere to Hide: Jack Starrett (Run Angel Run, Hollywood Man) / Hunter: Tom Gries (Breakout, Helter Skelter)
STARS: Nowhere to Hide: Lee Van Cleef (Killing Machine), Tony Musante (Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Incident), Russell Johnson (Great Skycopter Rescue), Charles Robinson, John Alderman (Teenage Jailbait) / Hunter: James Franciscus (Cat O'Nine Tails), Ned Beatty (Deliverance), Broderick Crawford, Linda Evans
SYNOPSIS: Two 1970's made-for-TV pilots.
Nowhere to Hide ( aka Fatal Chase / Die Spur des Skorpions ): Van Cleef looks like he's having fun playing a no-nonsense U.S. Marshall who specializes in protecting federal witnesses and getting them to the courthouse in one piece. He finds his patience tested when career mob man Tony Musante decides to turn state witness and testify. At first Musante fights Van Cleef's overbearing tactics but when the bullets start flying he learns to respect him. Lee moves his men, and Musante, to a remote island that's only accessible by boat or helicopter. When the mob goons find out their location they try to attack. Director Jack Starrett does a good job with the action and humor in this entertaining TV pilot that was never picked up for a series. Running time: 1hr 15mins
Hunter: James Franciscus stars as a lawyer sent to prison on false charges. After 8 years he gets out and immediately hires a private detective to find out who set him up. When the P.I. is murdered the only person left to solve the case is Franciscus himself. He's a little shaky at first but soon finds out that he's pretty good at being a gumshoe. A retired army captain (Broderick Crawford) and a sexy blonde prostitute (Linda Evans) figure into the plot. Ned Beatty is memorable as a detective who doesn't fully trust Franciscus but helps him with his investigation anyway. This is the premiere episode of the series that ran for one season. Running time: 52mins
