Nasty Hero (1987)
(aka The Avenger / Miami Avenger)
DIRECTOR: Nick Barwood
STARS: Scott Feraco (Miracle on Ice), Robert Sedgwick (Die Hard with a Vengeance), Carlos Palomino, Mike Starr (Ed Wood)
SYNOPSIS: This is an entertainingly cheesy 80's action classic. Tough guy "Chase" returns home to Florida after spending 6 months in jail. He was set up for a crime he didn't commit and wants to get revenge. In his words he's ready to "get nasty". He starts poking around and asking questions at an old criminal pal's auto shop where he deals in stolen cars. Eventually he figures out that a yuppy criminal and a crooked cop (Starr) were the ones who set him up. Nastiness ensues. Clocking in at less than 80 mins this one moves pretty quickly with car chases, shoot-outs and fight scenes. Feraco is hilariously grizzled as our single-minded hero. The villains are even more over-the-top and would be right at home with the well dressed, rich boy assholes of Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful and Less Than Zero. In the film's biggest action scene Chase is driving a carrier full of stolen cars as the crooked cop and two henchmen chase him down a lone Florida highway. Chase ties off the steering wheel with a chain, puts a toolbox on the gas pedal and climbs onto the back of the carrier to fight the bad guys! Even Mad Max never did that. Later in the film his arm gets broken and his mechanic buddy builds a giant metal brace that he wears Road Warrior style to smash skulls. The hairstyles, fashions and music all scream 1980's. This would fit in well with other films of that era like Band of the Hand, Snake Eater, Cobra and Road House.
