Mission Phantom (1967)

$20.00

(aka Come Rubare un Quintale di Diamanti in Russia)

DIRECTOR: Guido Malatesta (Colossus and the Headhunters)

STARS: Fernando Sancho (In the Folds of the Flesh, Voodoo Black Exorcist), Eduardo Fajardo (Knife of Ice, Barcelona Kill), Ingrid Schoeller (They Paid with Bullets, Sigpress Against Scotland Yard), Peter Martell (French Sex Murders)

SYNOPSIS: A group of master thieves try to steal billions of dollars worth of diamonds from a vault in Russia during the cold war. This entertaining action comedy from Spain is a spoof of heist and spy films of the 60's. A wheelchair bound mastermind, with a team of sexy lady helpers, organizes a group of criminals to rob the Bank of Moscow. The leader of the group is played by Fernando Sancho. He's more familiar to filmgoers as an unwashed loudmouth villain in spaghetti westerns like A Pistol for Ringo and Wrath of God. In this film he sports a (dubbed) British accent and wears nice suits with a bowtie! He's in charge of the actual heist plans while other members specialize in electronics, tunnels, fake passports, brute strength, seduction, etc. The film spends a good 30mins on the vault break-in and theft while the finale is devoted to getting the diamonds out of the Soviet Union. A wary Russian general (Fajardo, another spaghetti western vet) and a sexy "Ilsa"-like Russian femme (Schoeller), who secretly covets Western values, cause some trouble for our heroes. Plenty of action and laughs in this forgotten rarity. The translated title is "How to Steal a Ton of Diamonds in Russia".
