(aka Walls)

DIRECTOR: Thomas Shandel

STARS: Winston Rekert (Your Ticket is No Longer Valid), Lloyd Berry, Anthony Holland (All That Jazz), Elizabeth Leigh-Milne (Visiting Hours), Perry Long

SYNOPSIS: Based on a real event from 1975, this film looks at inhumane prison practices in a Canadian prison. A handful of convicts, including the charismatic “Danny” (Rekert), are kept in isolation for extended periods of time after a prison riot. The guards physically and psychologically abuse them and in some cases they even withhold medications and toilet paper. A sympathetic counselor / social worker, “Karen”, manages to convince the spineless warden to let the men back into the general prison population as well as her rehabilitation program. They respond well and problems in the facility are greatly reduced. Unfortunately, the guards aren’t happy with this plan and manage to fuck it up. The 2nd half of the film is a hostage thriller with the convicts holding some of the staff members, including Karen, as hostages in an attempt to escape. Needless to say it doesn’t end well. This is a straightforward drama with drug use, sadism and bursts of violence.
