Altin Cocuk (Golden Boy) (1966)

$20.00

DIRECTOR: Memduh Ün (Cellat)

STARS: Goksel Arsoy, Altan Gunbay, Reha Yurdakul (Superman Donuyor)

SYNOPSIS: The Turkish "James Bond". It seems like there's a Turkish version of every popular American film from the 70's and early 80's including Star Wars, Superman, E.T., Death Wish, Rambo, Spiderman, etc. So, taking on Ian Fleming's classic Agent 007 should be no surprise. It starts off with a lingerie clad woman doing a slow strip tease / dance while the title song "Golden Boy", which is sung partially in English, plays. Our super spy hero looks like a cross between Arch Hall Jr. and Donald Trump. All the women in the film practically throw themselves at "Golden Boy" as he swaggers through a room like he owns it. After he knocks off a bad guy his boss gives him tickets for a vacation in London. In a rarity for these films they actually shot on location as we see GB zip around the city streets with Big Ben in the background. When he leaves, no less than four Brit gals kiss him goodbye at the airport! Back in Istanbul GB gets involved in car chases, shoot-outs, double-crosses, fights and more sexy ladies. There's a mean bald-headed villain who calls his henchmen "Blockheads". His plot is to blow up Turkey's nuclear facility ("It'll be more fun than Hiroshima."). Damsels are tied up, burned with cigarettes and molested. Some Turkish films fall into the so-bad-it's-good category but overall this film is competently made. It may be hampered by its low budget but otherwise the plot is logical and entertaining. Recommended. In original spoken Turkish language with English subtitles.
