Make Room for Tomorrow (1979)

$20.00

(aka Au Bout du bout du blanc)

DIRECTOR: Peter Kassovitz
(Jakob the Liar)

STARS: Victor Lanoux (Cousin Cousine), Jane Birkin (Too Pretty to Be Honest), Georges Wilson (Don't Torture a Duckling), Henri Crémeux (Donkey Skin), Mathieu Kassovitz (Amélie)

SYNOPSIS: Overlooked French arthouse film with Jane Birkin. A man (Lanoux) and his sometimes estranged wife (Birkin) live in a warm but crumbling house in France with their precocious son (Kassovitz). For one week they host the man's father and grandfather. So, we have four generations of males under one roof. The man's father is a proud Jew with a good sense of family. The grandfather is a near suicidal figure who loves to play pranks. And finally the young son is narcissistic and unruly. He's played by Mathieu Kassovitz (the director's son) and would later go on to star in Amelie and direct the classic La Haine. The men have meals together, smoke pot, play games, get into arguments and talk about life. There's equal parts drama and comedy. All the actors do a good job with Birkin popping in and out of the story looking sexy as ever. In spoken French with English subtitles.
