I LOVE YOU, I DON'T dvd

(aka Je t'aime Moi non Plus)

(1976)

DIRECTOR: Serge Gainsbourg

STARS: Joe Dallesandro (Andy Warhol's Frankenstein, Season for Assassins), Jane Birkin (Too Pretty to Be Honest), Hugues Quester, Gerard Depardieu

SYNOPSIS: Strange love story from triple threat Serge Gainsbourg who wrote, directed and did the soundtrack. Joe Dallesandro stars as a burly, bisexual, garbage truck driver. He spends his days looking for trash to haul with his gay co-worker / lover. They end up in a remote area of France at a greasy roadside diner. Androgynous-look Jane Birkin is the only employee at the diner owned by a brutish old man. She has a short haircut, wears wife beaters and looks like a boy from behind. This is how Dallesandro first sees her and mistakes Jane for a "him"! They flirt a little and end up going on a few dates in the sad little town, to a garbage dump, sleazy hotels, etc. Their first attempt at sex fails because Dallesandro likes men. They solve this problem by only screwing doggy style as Birkin tries to lose her anal virginity. It becomes a running gag as the first 3-4 times they try she screams like a stuck pig and the various hotel owners kick them out! Finally, they have success in the back of Joe's garbage truck in the middle of a field. The stars both have full frontal nude scenes with Birkin getting naked at least half a dozen times after she's introduced. Look quick for a cameo by a young Gerard Depardieu. A strange, arty film that has some great camerawork and locations. Gainsbourg turns garbage dumps, old buildings, quarries, greasy spoons and dirt roads leading nowhere into things of ugly beauty. In French with English subtitles. WIDESCREEN.
