(aka A Grande Art)

DIRECTOR: Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries)

STARS: Peter Coyote (Jagged Edge, Man Inside), Amanda Pays (The Kindred), Tcheky Karyo (La Femme Nikita)

SYNOPSIS: 90's thriller with Peter Coyote as a gritty photographer living in Brazil. A serial killer who favors knives kills a blonde woman and leaves his special mark on her body. Meanwhile a subject of Coyote's photos, a young prostitute, contacts him about a problem she's having. She stole a computer disc from one of her clients and had planned on blackmail. But now she just wants to give it back with Coyote's help. Before she can does this she ends up as another victim of the killer. Later two men show up at Coyote's place looking for the disc. They stab him and beat up his sexy girlfriend Amanda Pays. After he gets out of the hospital Coyote seeks out the expertise of seasoned knife fighter Tcheky Karyo. The training sequence is great as Karyo starts Coyote off with a metal ruler teaching him all the basics. Then eventually the two spar with real blades until Karyo is satisfied. They visit an exotic knife seller to get one for Coyote in a scene reminiscent of Travis Bickle buying guns in Taxi Driver. Like an amateur private eye Coyote works his way through sleazy strip joints, trains, bars and dirt poor villages tracking down the killer. The climax is a knife fight to the death. Peter Coyote is great as usual, there's a lot of authentic location shooting and the knife fights are well done.
