THE JET BENNY SHOW

(1986)

DIRECTOR:
Roger Evans (Forever Evil)

STARS: Steve Norman, Polly MacIntyre, Kevin Dees

SYNOPSIS: A space traveler, who looks and acts like Jack Benny (Norman), helps a damsel in distress in this parody of old Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers serials. This low budget comedy has some fun primitive special effects similar to films like Dark Star, Alien Factor and Galaxy Invader. Our hero looks, acts and talks like Jack Benny. He wears a spacesuit with a flowing cape and gloves. His best friend and assistant is a black robot named "Robchester" who mimics "Rochester" from the Jack Benny Show. Their spaceship crash lands on a foreign planet and Robchester goes MIA . Then Benny rescues a princess from a group of henchman loyal to the villain "Zane". Her brother the prince is also fighting against the evil empire. The villain chews up the scenery, his henchman are fairly inept and Benny seems mildly annoyed by the whole situation he finds himself in. He's shocked to learn that the bad guys have altered Rochester's prime directive and made him into a killing machine who's been attacking the peaceful kingdom of the princess. Benny rewires him and together with the siblings they save the day. Despite the artwork above and some online reviews this isn't a parody of "Star Wars". There are a few jokes related to that film but Sci-Fi cliffhangers are the real inspiration. Of course to a large degree Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark were also inspired by the same serials from the late 30's and early 40's.
