They Still Call Me Bruce (1987)

$20.00

DIRECTOR: James Orr / Johnny Yune

STARS: Johnny Yune, David Mendenhall (Over the Top), Robert Guillaume (Death Warrant), Joey Travolta (Car Crash, Hunter’s Blood), Pat Paulsen (Night Patrol), Irma P. Hall (Book of Numbers)

SYNOPSIS: It’s hard to believe that the orginal film They Call Me Bruce made a whopping $16 million at the box office back in 1982. It was a surprise hit starring Johnny Yune, a small time comedian known for his late night talk show appearances and self-deprecating humor. Not sure why it took 5 years to get this unreleased-on-DVD sequel out but it has much of the same type of humor as the first film. Yune comes to American in search of the soldier who saved his life during the Korean war. Along the way he’s constantly running into cartoonish criminals, gangsters and tough guys who want to beat him up. His schtick is always the same: “With my right foot, I can kick your face. With my left foot, I can kick your nose. With my fingers, I can poke your eyes out. Take a good look at my face. I'm an Oriental!”. He then does some awkward karate moves and most of the time the opponents run away. He gets involved with a “Guardian Angels” style group who train at a local karate school, befriends an orphan boy (Mendenhall) and his dog, and beds down with a friendly call girl. There’s a crime boss and his henchmen that figure into the plot as well. It ends with Yune fighting in a big karate tournament where he’s supposed to ‘take a dive’. This is filled with very (very) corny humor that almost always revolves around Yune misunderstanding English words, phrases and slang. It was shot in the shittier areas of Houston, TX. You could often find it playing on cable TV and even “Commander USA” in the 1980’s.
