The Devil at Your Heels (1981)
DIRECTOR: Robert Fortier
STARS (as themselves): Ken Carter, Evel Knievel, Dar Robinson, Gordon Pinsent (narrator) (The Heatwave Lasted Four Days)
SYNOPSIS: In this amazing documentary, daredevil Ken Carter tries to jump his rocket car about a 1/2 mile length from Canada, over the St. Lawrence river, to the United States! Carter spent decades as a stunt driver jumping cars. There's footage of him at down & dirty track events where he jumps over dozens of cars and usually lands by crashing. This Canadian Evel Knievel has numerous broken bones, great charisma and a showman's personality. This documentary details a 5 year effort to build a rocket powered car and a towering ramp. And then use them to break a distance record for jumping a car. The cast of real life characters must be seen to be believed. Blue collar mechanics, construction workers, promoters, fellow drivers, stuntman legend Dar Robinson, and even Evel Knievel himself. They all give their opinion on the stunt with most agreeing that the it is an impossible task. There are times when things get so crazy you'll think you're watching a mockumentary… but it's all true. The story has more twists and turns than a Christopher Nolan film. Adding to the fun of this film is some serious narration by Canadian acting vet Gordon Pinsent. He details all the events as they unfold but sometimes his narration is borderline sarcastic. A must-have!
