Pinball Summer (1980)
(aka Pick-Up Summer, aka Slammer Girls
DIRECTOR: George Mihalka (My Bloody Valentine)
STARS: Michael Zelniker (Heartaches), Carl Marotte (Breaking All The Rules), Helene Udy (One Night Only), Karen Stephen, Joy Boushel (Terror Train, Humungous)
SYNOPSIS: Beating Porky's to movie theaters by one year, this Canadian sex comedy is filled with pranks, sexy girls and teenage hijinks. Our two heroes Greg and Steve spend their days trying to get laid, eating fast food, riding around in their van and messing with a local biker gang. The plot itself is paper thin but the film is packed from start to finish with action. It's like watching a "Best of" compilation of T&A sex comedies scenes. You'll see a flasher who wears women's lingerie, car chases and crashes, bumbling cops, a bikini contest, vintage pinball machines, pot smoking, a night at the Drive-In (where Krakatoa: East of Java plays), a game of strip pinball and people calling each other "Turkey!". There's also a chubby nerd named "Whimpy". He rides around town on his mini-bike and lusts after "Sally" (sexy Joy Boushel), the Double D waitress at the burger joint. It all ends at "Pete's Arcade" with a pinball contest showdown between the leader of the biker gang and Greg. Credit to the filmmakers for successfully hiding its Canadian origins. I imagine most viewers would be unaware this was not made in the United States. It's filled with songs including the "Pinball Summer" theme. A year later the director and some of the same actors went on to make one of the best slasher films of the 1980's: My Bloody Valentine.
