Operation Julie (1985)
DIRECTOR: Bob Mahoney
STARS: Colin Blakely (Murder on the Orient Express, Spy with a Cold Nose), Kay Adshead, John Ainley, Bruce Payne (Passenger 57), Peter Baldwin
SYNOPSIS: A small squad of dedicated officers in the UK work day and night to stop two drug gangs producing large quantities of LSD. Based on real events, and a book, this UK television movie details the efforts of authorities over the course of 2+ years to catch the drug makers. Colin Blakey starts as the officer in charge. He has a real dislike to druggies, hippies and tree huggers. So, with great glee he takes on this task of preventing LSD from making it's way to all the "festivals" planned for the teens and drop-outs. Meanwhile the stiff upper lip police chief wants results sooner rather than later. There's a very small amount of nudity and sleaze with most of the film focusing on stake-outs, chase scenes, undercover agents and good old detective work. It's hard to get too worked up about LSD as the boogeyman of the film these days. The authorities talk about it like it's the end of the world. Nobody in the film dies from LSD. We only see a few trips gone bad. It's curious seeing Passenger 57 villain Bruce Payne as a young long-haired officer working undercover as a filthy biker.
