Knights of the City (1986)
DIRECTOR: Dominic Orlando
STARS: Leon Isaac Kennedy (Penitentiary), Nicholas Campbell (The Dead Zone), John Mengatti (“White Shadow”, Meatballs Part II), Stoney Jackson (Trespass), Janine Turner (Cliffhanger), Michael Ansara (The Manitou), The Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, Smokey Robinson
SYNOPSIS: In the 1980’s there was an explosion of low budget movies revolving around dancing, music videos, street gangs and rap music. This one fits right in with films like Breakin’, Krush Groove, Heavenly Bodies, Rappin’, The Forbidden Dance, etc. Leon Issac Kennedy stars as the leader of a street gang, “The Royals”, that controls one side of town. His two main captains (Nicholas Campbell and John Mengatti) give the film’s best performances. They gang members are all pretty likable and only seem to be collecting protection money for their main income. Tiring of their dead end lifestyle they have dreams of having a hit record with their band. After a chance meeting with an executive (Ansara) and his daughter (a super hot 26-year old Janine Turner) they end up in a big music competition to get a record deal. At the same time, trouble with a their rivals “The Mechanics” threatens to derail the gang’s dreams. There are a number of bloodless fight scenes including a one-on-one battle between Kennedy and his rival at an abandoned factory. It’s entertaining in a 1980’s way and all very PG rated. Most of the wardrobe looks like a cross between Michael Jackson’s “Bad” video and The Road Warrior. There are numerous cameos from musicians including The Fat Boys and Kurtis Blow. Kennedy, who also wrote and produced the film, was a few years shy of 40 when he made this film despite dialog stating his character is in his late 20’s! The director is better known for his music videos from the early 80’s with bands like: Quiet Riot, Berlin, Rainbow, The Fat Boys, etc.
