Escape from El Diablo (1983)
(aka California Cowboys)
DIRECTOR: Gordon Hessler (Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Rage of Honor)
STARS: Jimmy McNichol (Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker), Timothy Van Patten (Class of 1984), Ethan Wayne (Cobra Mission), Patrick Mower (One Away)
SYNOPSIS: California beach bum pals Jimmy McNichol and Tim Van Patten decide to take a motorcycle ride into Mexico to check out an infamous bar / whorehouse called "Rosa's". Van Patten ends up getting in a fight with a local prison guard and they throw him in jail. The head of the prison (Mower) demands a payoff before he'll release him. When McNichol realizes that the jailers are all corrupt he gets his teen pals to come south of the border with their surfboards, motorcycles and skateboards. They hatch a plan to break their friend out of jail and get revenge on the vicious guards. This feels like a made-for-TV film with only some brief nudity to push it to a PG rating. Skinny Jimmy McNichol might be the last person you'd think of for an action hero. His sister Kristy would make a more formidable foe. It has more laughs than thrills as things are kept pretty light. Clearly the filmmakers wanted to cash in on the (pre) X Games fascination with plenty of skateboards, motorcycles, jet skis and wind surfing on display. Midnight Express meets Beach Blanket Bingo.
