Down on Us (1984)

$20.00

DIRECTOR: Larry Buchanan (Mars Needs Women, The Eye Creatures)

STARS: Sandy Kenyon, Gregory Allen Chatman, Riba Meryl, Brian Wolf

SYNOPSIS: Larry Buchanan directed this rare conspiracy film about the U.S. government's effort to silence the three "pied pipers" of rock and roll: Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin! This film was Buchanan's longest epic, clocking in at just a few minutes short of two hours! Sandy Kenyon stars as a mysterious government agent who gives orders to various henchmen while dressing up like "Secret Squirrel". He even takes out Janis Joplin on his own. The film starts with Kenyon himself being murdered to silence him. His son finds a secret diary which lays out the plans to kill all the Rock & Roll icons. The film then flashes back to the events in the diary. All the assassinations are shown in great detail with Morrison's fate having a surprise twist. You have to give credit to Buchanan for featuring concert footage as the bulk of the film's content. Most directors would have shied away since they didn't have the rights to any of the original music. Instead Buchanan doubles down hiring musicians to create sound-alike songs for the three to perform. The most convincing music comes from the Jim Morrison character with Hendrix a close second and Joplin in last. The acting performances have Hendrix (Chatman) as the best with Joplin (Meryl) second and Morrison (Wolf) dead last. Each performer is given numerous songs to sing. They sound like B-Side songs you've never heard being played on an old transistor radio. Song titles include: "Crystal Wings", "Phantom in the Rain" and "Poet's Reprise". Conspiracy fans will get a kick out of this as it's all presented as serious as a heart attack. Oliver Stone eat your heart out.
