THE WIZARD OF OZ
dvd

(aka Ozu no Mahôtsukai)

(1982)

DIRECTOR: Fumihiko Takayama, John Danylkiw (U.S. version)

STARS: (voices) Aileen Quinn (Annie), Lorne Green (Battlestar Galactica), Billy Van, Thick Wilson, John Stocker, Elizabeth Hanna, Wendy Thatcher

SYNOPSIS: Rare animated version of L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz from Japan's Toho Studios. The classic tale is given the Anime treatment and has a number of differences from the 1939 version. This time Dorothy (voiced by Quinn the same year she starred in Annie) has blonde hair, big Anime eyes and an "Alice in Wonderland" style outfit. She's whisked off to Oz and only meets three munchkins before heading off on the yellow brick road. One by one she encounters the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion. They're all exceedingly polite (as is Dorothy). We don't meet the witch until almost an hour into the film. The film is technically a musical with only three songs as a few get repeated. Quinn sings the songs which are simply on the soundtrack rather than being performed onscreen. Although much tamer and aimed more at the kiddies some purists claim it's closer to the original book than the Judy Garland classic.
