TIMEFIGHTERS IN THE

LAND OF FANTASY

&

CAPTAIN FUTURE

(1984
(1975) / 1978)

DIRECTOR: Timefighters: Jim Terry, Tatsuo Yoshida (Speed Racer) / Captain Future: Kôzô Morishita (Knights of Zodiac)

STARS: Timefighters: (voices) Alan Rich, Donnie Jo, Dorothy Mendez / Captain Future: ??

SYNOPSIS: Two Japanese animated TV rarities.

Timefighters: White-haired Professor Von Spock builds a ship that can travel through time and go into "Fantasy Land" where all the famous storybook characters (Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, etc) live. A villainous trio made up of the evil mistress Lucinda Skullduggery and her bumbling henchmen are searching for "Carvilite crystals" to build more powerful weapons. The crystals are hidden somewhere in Fantasy Land. It's up to the professor's friends Jett and Starr, along with their sidekicks Tonk the robot and Squawky the parrot, to do their best to stop the evil plans and help the storybook characters at the same time. All the professor's ships are shaped like insects (beetle, locust, ladybug, etc) while the villains have animal shapes (bear, ape, cat, etc). This film is about 7 episodes of the Japanese TV show Time Bokan put together into feature length form. Each story ends in a battle between the two ships. The villains always end up losing and are left covered in broken parts in a cloud of smoke. It's also a musical filled with songs (usually by the villains). Tonk's robot voice reminds me of 1980's arcade games. It's fun, but definitely more on the kiddie side of anime. English dubbed version. Running time: 1hr 34mins

Captain Future: The animation on this one is really great. Almost up there with Battle of the Planets, Star Blazers, etc. You have the stock characters of a dashing hero, sexy girl, musclebound sidekick and robot servant. But the show has more of a serious edge to it. Captain Future isn't too goody-goody, the girl is scrappy and can kick ass, the sidekick is amusing but not dopey and the robot is more straightforward instead of being silly. The heroes are up against a super villain named King Wrecker. He's destroying precious "Gravium" mines on various planets in a bid to rule the galaxy. Our heroes battle Wrecker and his soldiers by land, water and in the air with laser shoot-outs, explosions, spaceship duels and lots of cliffhangers. The musical score is surprisingly good and funky. These episodes are #9 ("Rekka no Inbo") and #10 ("Kaitei no Wana") from the original Toei Japanese series. English dubbed versions. Running time: 2 episodes = 54mins total
