THE BURGLARS

(aka La Casse)

(1971)

DIRECTOR: Henri Verneuil (The Sicilian Clan, Fear Over the City)

STARS: Jean-Paul Belmondo (That Man from Rio, Night Caller), Omar Sharif (The Baltimore Bullet), Dyan Cannon, Robert Hossein, Renato Salvatori

SYNOPSIS: Fun crime/ action caper with a few laughs as well. Belmondo once again plays the smirking hero that he does so well. This time he's a master thief. With the help of a few cohorts he pulls off a complex home invasion / jewel theft at the film's start. This great scene is 20 minutes long with no dialog spoken (ala Riffifi). Towards the end of the theft they almost get caught by a detective played by Omar Sharif. After they safely have the jewels the gang has trouble finding a ship out of Greece with a captain that won't ask any questions. Belmondo stashes the jewels until they can get out of town. Unfortunately, this gives Sharif some time to figure out they robbed the house. He blackmails Belmondo and tells him he wants the jewels. As the film progresses things get more serious and some blood is shed. Sharif's comeuppance in the finale is quite memorable. Some fun action scenes including a fantastic 10 minute car chase through the streets, highways, crowds of people and underground tunnels that must be seen to be believed. Based on the novel by David Goodis. Ennio Morricone provides the score. In spoken French with English subtitles. WIDESCREEN
