HOUR OF THE ASSASSIN

(1987)

DIRECTOR:
Luis Llosa (Crime Zone, Sniper)

STARS: Erik Estrada (Trackdown, C.H.I.P.S), Robert Vaughn (City in Fear, Black Moon Rising), Alfredo Álvarez Calderón, Orlando Sacha

SYNOPSIS: After an election in troubled San Pedro, Peru, there's a failed assassination attempt on the newly elected president. The military leaders want him dead and decide to find a specialist to get the job done right. They hire professional hitman Erik Estrada. Estrada quietly sneaks into Peru and begins gathering the tools he needs. He makes deals with local criminals and finds time to hook up with a photojournalist. Meanwhile, CIA man Robert Vaughn is hot on his trail working with a liberal newspaper man to stop the assassination. Despite working with a low budget, the director, Luis Llosa (Sniper, Anaconda, The Specialist, etc), gets big production value out of his film. There are tons of action scenes and they're very good. Shoot-outs, car chases and huge explosions. Not to mention giant crowds of extras to make the protest scenes believable. Despite Estrada's star billing, Robert Vaughn gets as much, or more, screen time. He plays it straight and really sinks his teeth into this role as he chases bad guys and gets into numerous gun fights. In one great sequence Vaughn takes a ride in a suspect's brand new car. He drives the man's vehicle into the woods as they sideswipe and crash into tree after tree until the suspect starts talking! Fans of films like Ministry of Vengeance, Cocaine Wars and McBain will dig this one. This is a surprisingly entertaining sleeper.
